Cedar House Media Wall

Private residential · 2025 · 6 weeks

Low-angle view of a modern wooden spiral staircase in a house interior.

Project overview

The brief, in a sentence: make it belong.

A living room that needed to be a cinema, a library and a calm family space at once. Our slatted western-red-cedar media wall hides a 65-inch screen, full AV rack, log store and toy cupboards behind acoustically backed slats with integrated lighting.

Challenge

What made it hard

Cedar moves and AV gear runs hot. Slats ride on a ventilated acoustic plinth with shadow gaps sized for seasonal movement; the rack bay breathes through concealed slots, and every cable route was mapped before a single slat was fixed.

Materials

What it is made of

Western red cedar slats with acoustic fleece backing, smoked-oak plinth and cupboards, blackened steel screen recess and dimmable 2700K linear LEDs.

Craftsmanship

How we built it

AV consultant coordinated from day one, elevations approved with finish samples in evening light, six weeks from survey to handover including two evenings of lighting tuning.

Result

How it lives now

Movie nights with cinema sound and none of the gear visible; Sunday mornings with the screen shuttered behind cedar. The room finally does all three jobs.

Spacious modern home interior featuring a curved staircase and stylish decor.
Slatted timber composed with the room’s vertical lines.
Close-up of hands crafting wood with tools in a carpentry workshop.
Slat spacing set by hand in the workshop.
